Shopping in Glasgow: The Christmas Countdown is On!

With three shopping centres located in the city centre and an array of popular and quirky shops, Glasgow is the perfect place to relax in a bit of retail therapy. Although, I would avoid going into Primark on Argyle Street if you're looking for an enjoyable experience - two minutes in the shop is fit to give anyone a migraine!

Since Christmas is fast approaching, I figured with this blog post I would give you an insight into some of my favourite shops that I’ll be heading into for gifts and decorations, as well as cute homeware items.

Oliver Bonas

Somehow I always manage to pop into Oliver Bonas on my way to work or Glasgow Central, not even to buy anything but just to walk around and look at the gorgeous products!

If you’re looking for Christmas gift inspiration or a wee treat for yourself, Oliver Bonas is the place to go. Located on both Buchanan Street and Byres Road, it has everything you could ever need in terms of homeware bits and accessories, from bedazzled Christmas baubles to novelty salt and pepper shakers.

They also have great stocking fillers including luxury facemasks and fragrances as well as vegan chocolates and brownie mixes in a jar!

Hotel Chocolat

Creating everything chocolate related from truffles to advent calendars, Hotel Chocolat is a sweet treat lover’s dream.

You’ve probably seen Hotel Chocolat’s famous hot choclate 'Velvetiser' all over your social media now that the nights are drawing in and hot chocolate season is back, and I have to say, I couldn’t be more excited.

I recently popped in and stumbled upon their Halloween collection of chocolate boxes: Carvin the Pumpkin, Cryptopher the Vampire and Wingston the Bat. Cryptopher is my personal favourite, with 16 caramel milk chocolates hidden inside that are to die for! I would highly recommend visiting the shop on Buchanan Street buying yourself a box as it’s only right to treat yourself every now and again.

Papyrus

As Glasgow’s leading gift shop, Papyrus is filled with a range of jewellery, accessories, toys and kitchenware to name a few. Located at the top of Byres Road, Papyrus is one of many shops in the West End that offer a range of quirky gifts as well as lovely homeware bits like Le Creuset mugs and dishes.

The shop windows are always filled with trendy items, with Stanley cups and Jellycats being the latest features. There's also a whole cookshop section hidden away downstairs with everything you could ever need to give your kitchen a little spruce up.

For those who love wax melts, be sure to pop in and treat yourself or a loved on to a selection box of handmade wax melts in a range of gorgeous scents.

Sostrene Grene

A Christmas fanatic’s dream. Having only recently brought out their Christmas collection on Buchanan Street, I think it goes to show how much I love Sostrene Grene’s Christmas decorations since I’ve already been in twice!

This shop is perfect if you’re looking for a relaxed shopping experience and to find some lovely home bits to display all year round as well as at Christmas time.

Although I absolutely love nostalgic, ‘tacky’ Christmas decorations like your retro garlands you’d have in primary school and colourful fairy lights, Sostrene Grene offer more sophisticated homeware pieces that draw inspiration from natural & Nordic aesthetics.

So, if you’re looking for glittery, pastel baubles and cute tealight holders, then head on down to Sostrene Grene.

Hopefully I’ve given you some Christmas shopping inspiration to help you get a head start this November and December. With only 57 days to go, the countdown is officially on!

The Grosvenor Picture Theatre Glasgow: Step Back in Time through Film

Calling all film lovers! I’ve found a hidden gem in Glasgow’s West end for you to enjoy your next solo cinema date! Located in Ashton Lane, The Grosvenor Picture Theatre offers a unique experience for film fanatics. As Glasgow’s oldest cinema, The Grosvenor transports you back in time with its dimly lit cinema rooms featuring burgundy leather seats and art deco side lamps. Compared to cinemas like Cineworld or VUE, The Grosvenor certainly wins the competition for best cinema experience. I first discovered The Grosvenor last Summer when strolling down Ashton Lane. With my exams complete and a free day in my calendar, I decided to head in to watch Josh O’Connor’s Italian film, La Chimera . Set in 1980’s Tuscany, La Chimera follows English archaeologist, Arthur (Josh O’Connor), and his crew of grave robbers as they loot Etruscan tombs. Whilst exploring themes of love, history and class, the overall aesthetics and visuals of the film were truly stunning, with an eclectic mix of character...

Brunch Spots in Glasgow: Indulge in Merchant City's Best Cafés

Going for brunch at the weekend after a busy week is one of my favourite activities, especially in Glasgow. Merchant City is definitely the place to go, full of cafés offering some of the best brunch plates I've ever had! I’ve made a wee list of some amazing cafés you can visit if you haven't already. For those that like to be organised, all of the cafés listed allow you to pre-book a table online, saving you the hassle of walking around and trying to find a free table. Dog owners will be happy to know that all the cafés are also pet-friendly. So, bring along your furry friends to keep you company! Wilson Street Pantry No matter what time or day of the week it is, Wilson Street Pantry is always busy because it's just that good! If you enjoy sweet things for brunch, I can guarantee that the French toast will be some of the best you’ll ever have! Although I’m no coffee expert, Wilson Street do an amazing flat white. Located along from Wilson Street pantry is t...

The University of Glasgow's campus: Explore Stunning Gothic Architecture

Now that the leaves are changing from the greens and yellows of Summer, to the burnt oranges and browns of Autumn, why not explore the stunning gothic architecture of Glasgow University's Campus on a crisp Autumn day?  The architecture of the old university buildings certainly gives off a Harry Potter vibe, with its spires and cloisters. However, you’ll be surprised to know that Harry Potter was never actually filmed in any of the campus locations! During the Christmas period, the cloisters within the building are wrapped with fairy lights, creating the most magical setting, especially at night time. Take a look at the Instagram-worthy cloisters:  Christmas Cloisters The University offers campus tours led by students, lasting between 1 and 2 hours. However, if you’re like me and enjoy exploring places at your own pace, you can embark on a self-guided tour following the campus map. Take a look at the University's website for more information:  Campus Tours .  I find t...
