Located in Kelvingrove park, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum offers the perfect relaxing activity for those looking to explore a range of arts, history and culture. It’s no surprise that with 22 galleries showcasing an array of history and artworks, including that of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, it is one of Glasgow’s most popular attractions, with the added bonus of being completely free of charge – perfect for us students on a budget!
My personal favourite exhibition is Sophie Cave’s ‘Floating Heads’, featured above the steps to the first floor. Over 50 white heads can be seen hanging from the ceiling, each baring a different expression. Yes, this does sound disturbing but in reality it’s very amusing – trust me! As you walk around the room you are met with a different face, from sadness to happiness, making for some great photos.

While you wander round each display, be sure to make a quick pit stop to the Centre Hall where a daily organ recital takes place from 1pm Monday to Saturday and 3pm on Sundays. It’s an experience that is sure to give you goosebumps, even more so at Christmas when the festive tunes are played! (take a look at an organ recital from last Christmas Christmas Organ Recital)

To wrap up your visit, why not enjoy a cup of coffee and slice of cake in the KG Café? Or, if you so fancy, a glass of wine? At my last visit, I enjoyed the soup of the day with a sandwich and a flat white, whilst a couple beside me indulged in a glass of red wine – it was 5 o’clock somewhere I guess!
Rain or
shine, I would highly recommend popping into the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and
Museum whenever you are looking to explore what Glasgow has to offer. Whether
you are looking to explore the range of quirky and educational exhibitions, or to simply take a break from your busy work schedule, it offers the perfect ‘chill
day’ activity.
