Glasgow Mural Trail: Discover the Colourful City Centre

Glasgow is a hub for arts and culture, boasting an amazing art and music scene.

One artistic project in particular that caught my eye when I first moved to Glasgow was the city centre's Mural Trail.

For visitors to Glasgow, the mural trail offers an inexpensive way to explore the city. The trail is weaved around several shops and businesses, adding a splash of colour to the lanes and streets.

I’ve yet to discover the full collection of murals in-person, however, I thought I’d walk you through a couple of my favourites I’ve found so far.

Artivism

Location: Cathedral Street

Created by care experienced young people, the mural’s aim is to breakdown the stigma surrounding care experienced individuals, giving them the opportunity to express their talent and voice through the means of art.

The artwork is located on Cathedral Street on the way to the Strathclyde University. It certainly brightens up my morning walk to Uni!

UCI CWC 2023

Location: George Street

You can't miss this mural!

It  was created as part of Glasgow’s preparations as hosts of the UCI Cycling World Championships in 2023.

Inspired by retro cycling jerseys, 90's kids bikes and the 'Old Faithful' bike of Scottish cycling champion, Graeme Obree, this bright and bold mural spans across the car park located on George Street to Montrose Street.

Simple yet effective, the colour-block patterns add life to the street where Strath students flock to at lunchtime for a Greggs!

University of Strathclyde

Location: George Street

The 'Wonderwall' mural encompasses several Strathclyde University buildings and celebrates the achievements of the people of Strathclyde.

If you study at Strathclyde, you’ll be familiar with the Graham Hills building; if not, let’s just say it’s not the prettiest. However, with the addition of the murals it’s a completely different building. Every corner of the building features different artworks that bring life to the dull grey walls hidden underneath.

Saint Mungo

Location: High Street

If you lived in the Strathclyde Student Village halls in first year, you’ll probably recognise Saint Mungo from your weekly walk to the High Street Aldi for a food shop.

The mural depicts the patron saint and founder of Glasgow holding a Robin. It’s hard to miss if you take a wander down High Street, perfectly livening up a quiet corner of Glasgow.

Fellow Glasgow Residents

Location: Ingram Street

Spanning across Ingram Street car park in Merchant City, the Fellow Glasgow Residents mural showcases an autumnal scene of the wildlife found in Glasgow, from squirrels to hedgehogs.

Those who love going for brunch in Merchant City will probably walk past this mural without even knowing! So, the next time you pop into Spitfire Espresso for a coffee, make sure to check out this mural just across the road.

So, on one of the rare dry days in Glasgow, why not take yourself for a walk around the city centre and try and find as many murals as you can?

I love the murals and think they do an amazing job at brightening up even the dullest areas of the city.

Go and explore them up close for yourself!

The Grosvenor Picture Theatre Glasgow: Step Back in Time through Film

Calling all film lovers! I’ve found a hidden gem in Glasgow’s West end for you to enjoy your next solo cinema date! Located in Ashton Lane, The Grosvenor Picture Theatre offers a unique experience for film fanatics. As Glasgow’s oldest cinema, The Grosvenor transports you back in time with its dimly lit cinema rooms featuring burgundy leather seats and art deco side lamps. Compared to cinemas like Cineworld or VUE, The Grosvenor certainly wins the competition for best cinema experience. I first discovered The Grosvenor last Summer when strolling down Ashton Lane. With my exams complete and a free day in my calendar, I decided to head in to watch Josh O’Connor’s Italian film, La Chimera . Set in 1980’s Tuscany, La Chimera follows English archaeologist, Arthur (Josh O’Connor), and his crew of grave robbers as they loot Etruscan tombs. Whilst exploring themes of love, history and class, the overall aesthetics and visuals of the film were truly stunning, with an eclectic mix of character...

Brunch Spots in Glasgow: Indulge in Merchant City's Best Cafés

Going for brunch at the weekend after a busy week is one of my favourite activities, especially in Glasgow. Merchant City is definitely the place to go, full of cafés offering some of the best brunch plates I've ever had! I’ve made a wee list of some amazing cafés you can visit if you haven't already. For those that like to be organised, all of the cafés listed allow you to pre-book a table online, saving you the hassle of walking around and trying to find a free table. Dog owners will be happy to know that all the cafés are also pet-friendly. So, bring along your furry friends to keep you company! Wilson Street Pantry No matter what time or day of the week it is, Wilson Street Pantry is always busy because it's just that good! If you enjoy sweet things for brunch, I can guarantee that the French toast will be some of the best you’ll ever have! Although I’m no coffee expert, Wilson Street do an amazing flat white. Located along from Wilson Street pantry is t...

The University of Glasgow's campus: Explore Stunning Gothic Architecture

Now that the leaves are changing from the greens and yellows of Summer, to the burnt oranges and browns of Autumn, why not explore the stunning gothic architecture of Glasgow University's Campus on a crisp Autumn day?  The architecture of the old university buildings certainly gives off a Harry Potter vibe, with its spires and cloisters. However, you’ll be surprised to know that Harry Potter was never actually filmed in any of the campus locations! During the Christmas period, the cloisters within the building are wrapped with fairy lights, creating the most magical setting, especially at night time. Take a look at the Instagram-worthy cloisters:  Christmas Cloisters The University offers campus tours led by students, lasting between 1 and 2 hours. However, if you’re like me and enjoy exploring places at your own pace, you can embark on a self-guided tour following the campus map. Take a look at the University's website for more information:  Campus Tours .  I find t...
